Responding to NT: Introduction

We do some things in response to NT openings that will seem strange, and probably mildly confusing at first, but don’t be daunted. There will be lots here to help and you will be amazed at how quickly all of this will feel completely normal and familiar. A couple of points to get you started:

The numbers are different

We open 1NT only when our point count is between 15 and 17. This makes it pretty easy for responder to value their hand, given that we know 25 points is enough to bid game.  Even if opener has the minimum – 15 HCP – then 10 points in responder’s hand is enough for game. So opposite a 1NT opening, 10+ is a game forcing hand, rather than the 13 HCP needed to game force opposite a one level suit opening. The partnership might have enough for game if responder has nine, because opener might have 16 or 17, so 9 HCP is invitational (or a good 8 with an extra point added for a five card minor suit). A very balanced 8 or less than that and we are unlikely to make game so we treat that as weak.

There are more artificial bids

In fact, every 2 level bid in response to a 1NT opening is artifical! The reason for this is to allow the maximum exchange of information within the partnership and make it easier to find the best contract. The quick help panels will tell you what to do in all cases so you can learn as you go but it will also help you to understand why these systems are there if you watch the videos.

Start by watching the introductory video below and the responses for the specific hand types that follow will soon become second nature.
